- SOME GENERAL NOTES ON FILES CONTAINED IN THE SMARTFILE ARCHIVE
- --------------------------------------------------------------
-
- If you do not use Windows, the only file that you will need is SFILE.EXE.
- The rest of the README file is dedicated to installation of SmartFile under
- Windows.
-
- Two files have been included for those who wish to use SmartFile in Windows.
- The files are:
-
- SFILE.PIF PIF file for use with SmartFile.
- SFILE.ICO Windows Icon for SmartFile.
-
- Windows 3.1 installation is as follows:
- ---------------------------------------
- (1) Move SFILE.PIF and SFILE.ICO to your WINDOWS directory.
- (2) Move SFILE.EXE to a directory that is in your DOS path.
- (3) Go into Windows.
- (4) Open the group where you want SmartFile to appear.
- (5) Select: File, New, Program Item. Click "OK".
- (6) Type "SmartFile" next to Description and "SFILE.PIF" next to Command Line.
- IMPORTANT NOTE: This PIF file was designed to be used in conjunction with
- the DOS 6.0 MOUSE.COM mouse driver. The DOS 6.0 mouse driver knows how
- to handle the mouse for DOS programs that are windowed. If you are not
- using the DOS 6.0 mouse driver (usually loaded in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file),
- you will most likely not be able use the SmartFile mouse in the windowed
- mode. The DOS 6.0 mouse driver must be loaded (by DOS) before Smartfile.
- If your mouse is dead in SmartFile, either load the appropriate DOS
- mouse driver, or change your PIF file to Full Screen instead of
- Windowed. Remember that SmartFile is a DOS program, not a Windows
- program. For this reason, you are at the mercy of how well Windows
- interacts with DOS programs.
- (7) Select Change Icon. Click "OK" for the message: No Icons Available.
- (8) Select Browse and then select SFILE.ICO off the list of icons.
- (9) Click "OK" one window at a time and the setup is complete.
-
- Final note on Windows usage:
- ----------------------------
- Once again, since SmartFile is a DOS program, you must exit SmartFile by
- pressing <Esc> or both mouse buttons. The familiar Windows close option
- will not work to close SmartFile unless you change your PIF option to
- "Allow Close When Active." I do not recommend setting this option since
- closing SmartFile in the middle of a copy/delete/etc. could cuase data loss.
- Please refer to the online help for further assistance.
-
- Shareware Note:
- ---------------
- Unlike some shareware programs, SmartFile has been designed with the highest
- priority on functionality, ease of use, and the unobtrusive interface that
- will never "nag" you about registering the program. As you would extend your
- courtesy to a waiter or waitress for service, please send a $16 contribution
- to the development of SmartFile if you use the program. My address is
- listed below, as well as on the first on-line help screen. Please indicate
- that you are contributing to SmartFile since I have other shareware programs
- on the market.
- Thank you for using SmartFile! Your comments are welcome.
